"Great Value!"
My husband and I were very pleased with our 4-night stay at the Alexander in May, 2006. We checked the prices of EVERY hotel in Dublin 2 and this hotel was a great value for the dollar! We were looking for a looking for a clean, quiet, reasonably-priced hotel within walking distance of the major attractions and we couldn't have found a better place.
This is basically a 3.5 star (not 4 star) business hotel. It's a nice size, because it is large enough to have some ammenities, but small enough that you don't have the big motor coach tour groups staying here. The room was spacious for European standards - the room was much larger than our room in a 4 star hotel in London. The hotel was very quiet - no loud pub noise or crowds to keep you up at night. All we heard was an occassional door slamming which is just part of staying in any hotel.
The excellent location was the best part of the Alexander! All the Dublin 2 hotels claim to be within walking distance of the major attractions, but this hotel really is within easy walking distance of Trinity College, St. Stephen's Green, and all the major museums. Temple Bar and Dublin Castle were about a 10 - 15 minute walk. The Alexander's location close to Merrion Sq is a huge plus, because all the airport transportation and all the sight-seeing bus tours of the city stop right there so you don't have to walk far. The Pearse St DART station is close by which is another big plus if you're planning to take a day-trip along the coast to the Dublin suburbs.
When we return to Dublin we will definitely stay at the Alexander hotel every time. It's a great location and a great value!

"Second time"
This is the second time my husband and I have stayed at this hotel and we will go back again. I booked it through Expedia and got a double room for the first weekend in December for £170. The last time we stayed the parking was free but this time it was 39EUR for the weekend. Still, good secure parking if you need to take your car- the staff will give you a code to get in when you check into the hotel. We are considering taking the train the next time because of the charge for car parking and driving around Dublin is a disaster - the road/direction signs are completely random and we both drive around the Dublin area and the south of Ireland regularly. I had requested a high floor looking out towards Fenian Street and that's what we got. The room was spotlessly clean with a TV, iron & ironing board, tea/coffee making facilities, bathroom with power shower and bath, tolietries (soap, shampoo, shower gel, shower cap, shoe shine, body lotion), personal safe, separate air conditioning/heating system, hairdryer etc. We didn't eat in the hotel but I think the breakfast was 14.50 EUR for either continental brekkie or full Irish which I think is cheaper than the last time we stayed. The hotel is about a 5, 10 or 15 min walk from all the main sights, shopping areas, bars etc. We had our breakfast each morning in the West Coast Coffee Co cafe just a couple of mins walk from the hotel - lovely bagels! The Long Room library at Trinity College is worth a visit as is the National Gallery, Grafton Street, O'Connell Street and Henry Street shopping areas. The staff at the hotel checking in and checking out were very efficient as it was quite busy. We went to the Auld Dubliner pub in Temple Bar for a few drinks, great atmosphere, about 11 euro for two quarter bottles of wine . We also ate in the Hard Rock cafe at lunch - fairly pricey 50 euro for burgers & chips, two desserts and two soft drinks. We ate in the Thai Orchid which is quite nice and also in Pacinos Italian, just off Grafton Street. The food was ok (I liked mine, hubby didn't) but it had quite a nice atmosphere. Looking forward to our next trip to Dublin and we'll stay in the Alexander.
